Common faults and solutions of soft starters

1, instantaneous stop: the cause of this fault is generally due to the external control wiring error, if the user is not particularly need external control, we can tell the user only to soft up internal function code “9” (control mode) parameters set to “1” (keyboard control), you can avoid this fault.

2. The starting time is too long: This fault occurs because the current limiting value of the soft starter is set too low, which makes the starting time of the soft starter too long. In this case, we can set the parameter of the internal function code “4” (limiting the starting current) higher, which can be set to 1.5~2.0 times. What we must pay attention to is whether the power of the motor matches the power of the soft starter. If it does not match, in the case of a big difference, the parameter is set to 4~5 times brutally, starting and running for a period of time will burn out the internal silicon module or thyristor due to too much current.

3, the input phase is missing: (1) check whether the incoming power supply and the motor connection is loose; (2) Whether the output is connected to the load, and whether the load matches the motor; (3) Use a multimeter to detect whether there is a breakdown in the module or thyristor of the soft starter, and whether their trigger gate resistance meets the requirements under normal conditions (generally about 20~30 Euros); (4) Whether the internal wiring socket is loose. These factors may lead to the occurrence of the fault, as long as careful detection and make the correct judgment, can be eliminated.

4, frequency error: This fault is caused by the soft starter in the processing of internal power signal problems, and caused by the power frequency error. This kind of situation needs to consult the company’s product development software design engineer to deal with. Mainly to improve the design of power supply circuit.

5, parameter error: this fault needs to restart the input a factory value is good. Specific operations: Firstly disconnect the control power of the soft starter (AC 220V), hold down the “PRG “key on the soft start control panel with one finger, then send the control power of the soft starter, release the “PRG” key about 30 seconds later, and re-input the current factory value.

6. Starting overcurrent: Starting overcurrent is caused by heavy load and the starting current exceeds 500% times. The solutions include: set the internal function code “0” (starting voltage) higher, or set the function code “1” (rising time) longer, which can be 30~60s, and whether the current limiting value of the function code “4” is appropriate, which can generally be 2~3 times.

7.Running over current: the main cause of this fault may be that the module or thyristor heating intake is caused by too heavy load during the operation of soft start-up. Check whether the load matches the power size of the soft starter, and try to use as much soft as possible to drag as much motor load.

8, output phase: the main is to check whether the incoming line and outgoing cable is loose, soft output phase is broken or the motor is damaged.

9. In the process of debugging, the fault of starting signal missing phase occurs, the soft starter fault light is on, and the motor does not respond. The possible causes of the fault are as follows :a- When the starting mode is live, the operation sequence is incorrect (the correct operation sequence should be the main power supply first, then the control power supply). b- The soft starter protection action (check the power supply)c- The output end of the soft starter is not connected to the load (the soft starter can work normally only after the output end is connected to the load)

10, when the user is in use, the bypass contactor does not draw after the start is complete. The possible causes of the failure are :a- During the starting process, the protection device misoperates due to the small setting. (Reset the protection device)b- During debugging, the parameters of the soft starter are set improperly. (Mainly for the soft starter less than 55Kw, reset the parameters of the soft starter) c- Poor contact of the control line (check the control line)

11, the user may occasionally jump the air switch during the starting process. The fault causes are: A-air switch long delay setting value is too small or the air switch selection and motor is not fit. (The parameters of the air switch are enlarged appropriately or the air switch is re-selected.) The initial voltage parameter of the B-soft starter is set too high or the starting time is too long. (Reduce the starting voltage or shorten the starting time appropriately according to the load condition.) c During the starting process, the power grid voltage fluctuation is relatively large, which is easy to cause the soft starter to give wrong commands. An early bypass occurs. (Users are advised not to start high-power motors at the same time)d- Start with full load (try to reduce the load when starting)
